Heather’s love for broadcasting started out at the age of 8-years-old. Since she could remember she always wanted to become a journalist and felt that journalists had a platform where they’re able to use their voices to help others. She first began working in hard news then transitioned into sports. Heather grew up in a sports family where watching the NBA day in and day out was routine. It’s no surprise that basketball is her all-time favorite sport. Growing up playing sports with her three siblings she’s always had a very competitive mindset. Yako has years of sports broadcasting experience where she is well-known for her use of humor and satire in her sports reporting. She is an aggressive, energetic and creative journalist who can write, produce, anchor and report visually interesting stories on a variety of subjects for television and other digital platforms.
Heather’s news and sports reports have been featured in NBC4 News, NBC 12 News, ABC 15, FOX Sports Arizona, Oklahoma Live, OKC Sports Wrap, and KAET Channel 8. In addition to reporting and hosting a weekday sport entertainment show, Heather was the host of “Destination TV,” a 30 minute sports and entertainment syndicated show on ABC 15 that featured the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Suns and Coyotes. She has interviewed a plethora of athletes and celebrities and has worked multiple red carpet events. Yako also worked as a Sports Multimedia Journalist at NBC 12 News. She also was one of the top finalists for the Phoenix Suns first Social Sideline Reporter in NBA history.
Originally from Detroit, Heather was raised in Phoenix and attended Arizona State University at the Walter Cronkite Program School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where she studied journalism with an emphasis in broadcast. During her time there she was a sports anchor, reporter and producer for the Cronkite School’s award-winning 30-minute nightly newscast, the largest student-produced newscast in the world. She also was a Sports Multimedia Journalist for “Sun Devils 101” that aired on Fox Sports Arizona.
