Eight, Arizona PBS through a grant from the First Things First Yuma Regional Partnership Council is offering Free Early Literacy Workshops in Yuma County.
The workshop series is made up of six FREE two-hour workshops. The titles of the workshops within the series are: (1) What Are They Thinking? Understanding Your Child’s Brain Development; (2) I Spy Through Elmo’s Eyes…Literacy Around the House; (3) A Picture Book is Worth a Thousand Words; (4) Unlock the PBS Literacy Treasure Chest - Activities to Promote Language & Health Development; (5) Discovering Literacy Using Media; (6) Traveling the World-Wide Web-Seatbelt Buckled but No Passport Required.
The first 1.5 hours of the agenda is designed for the adults and the facilitator to work with the content and materials to show how parents can enhance language development and literacy development in the children they care for. The last 30 minutes of the workshop is designed for adult and child time to practice the skills taught and discussed within each workshop. Each of the workshops includes elements focusing on the specific Arizona Early Learning Literacy Standards. The workshops stress literacy training as a key factor for economic self-sufficiency, and encourages age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.
We have several series currntly underway and have addtional workshop series scheduled to start throughout the year.
