Delicious tamales and champurrado will be sold at the December Neighborhood House Farmers Market
El Centro, Calif., December 3rd, 2012" Neighborhood House Farmers Market will have fresh produce, some of which is locally and organically grown. This event will take place on Saturday, December 8th, 2012, from 9:00am to 1: 00pm. The farmers market is scheduled to take place at the Mission Thrift Store located on 201 3rd Street in El Centro. A variety of vendors are scheduled to sell their products, baked goods, crafts and much more. It is encouraged that residents of Imperial Valley shop locally for this holiday season, so that small business owners can also have a good Christmas.
Vincent Zazueta, the Farmers Market Urban Agriculture Adviser, will be leading free educational gardening workshops at every farmers market. Zazueta will begin its series of workshops with “How to Sow Seeds” at 11:00am to 12:00pm
"They [workshops] are free...and a way to encourage people to grow their own food and eat healthier food,” explains Zazueta. He believes this program will be a step towards preventing childhood obesity and serve as disease prevention for the local community.
In addition to free educational gardening workshops, free slices of vegan pumpkin, banana, and zucchini bread will be given to attendees. “Last month, we had free pico de gallo and we’d like to continue to give something away for free and healthy to attendees, especially something that most people don’ t really have-- vegan bread.” , says Jessica Yocupicio, Neighborhood House Farmers Market Coordinator.
Yocupicio believes the farmer’s market has the potential to develop in a space where the community can regularly gather on a monthly basis. "There's definitely a need for spaces like the farmers market in Imperial Valley, not just for our youth, but the entire community. Eating the right foods play a large part in one's health and so does having a sense of community which is ultimately what we're working towards " , says Yocupicio.
Anyone who is interested in participating as a vendor or would like more information can contact Jessica Yocupicio at (760)235-9837 or Vicent Zazueta at (760) 353-7096.
