YUMA, Ariz. - Last year, Wreaths Across America put over one million Christmas wreaths in over 12 hundred communities, on the graves of those who served in the military. Now, they are starting to raise money for this year's wreaths in Yuma.
The Rio Colorado Republican Women's Club is sponsoring Wreaths Across America. With over 3,000 veterans buried here in Yuma County, the group is looking to place as many wreaths on the graves as they can.
Each wreath costs $15 but donations of any amount are accepted. There are drop boxes at Brownies, Spragues, El Charro and The Chile Pepper. Donations will be accepted through November 25.
Last year they were able to place 323 wreaths on graves at Desert Lawn Memorial Park and Sunset Vista Cemetery in the Foothills.
"We need to honor our veterans and also our current military all the time," Apryl Brand with the Rio Colorado Republican's Women's Club said. "This is a military community and everyone is beloved and the ones that have fallen died for our liberties, our freedoms and all the things we enjoy here in America. We need to remember them," she said.
There will be a memorial service on December 16 at 10 a.m. Bagpipes will play and a message from the Yuma Proving Ground Chaplin.
Everyone is invited to attend. For more information call Apryl Brand at 928-341-0994. You can also mail in your donation by November 25 to Mariah Lemme at 1905 S. Parkway Dr., Yuma, AZ 85364. Please do not send cash in the mail.
