Here's why there's longer wait times at San Luis port

Construction at San Luis port

YUMA, Ariz. - The San Luis port of entry is undergoing some major changes.

Construction, which started at the beginning of November is expected to last through the Summer of 2018.

The construction is causing an increase in border wait times.

Chief Officer of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Annica Zacarias, tells News 11 that there are multiple construction projects happening at the San Luis port at this time.

The projects are an effort to help expand the port.

Currently, they are repaving the pre primary lanes. This is what they are doing before new booths will be installed. This part of the project is expected to be completed in a few weeks.

Zacarias says the new booths should help the flow of travelers and processing.

Another construction project happening is a new Annex building.

"We are excited about the new pedestrian annex building," Zacarias said. "Obviously, it's going to be expanding the port and assisting us to process travelers," she said.

But it's not just the construction affecting border wait times.

"The winter months are definitely the busy season here in Yuma County so of course with agriculture workers we do see a large influx of travelers coming through, " she said. "It's usually during the graveyard shift which would be maybe between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.," she added.
When traveling across border lines this holiday be sure to remember to give yourselves a little extra time due to these conditions.
