Imperial Count Deputy suffers broken leg trying to help DUI driver

An Imperial County Sheriff's Deputy is recovering from a broken leg after trying to help a driver who was under the influence.

According to KUSI News in San Diego, the incident happened Friday afternoon at 1:37 p.m. when the suspect was putting air into the tires of his car at a Mobile Gas Station in Lakeside, California.

The driver then got into his car and hit the gas pedal and drove off a 12-foot embankment and wall.  An off-duty Imperial County Deputy saw the accident and went to help aid the trapped driver.

The deputy jumped the wall and broke his leg. The deputy was transported to a local hospital.

Lakeside Firefighters extricated the driver. The driver walked away with no injuries. The driver did fail a sobriety test and refused the breath analyzer.

California Highway Patrol arrested the driver.
