YUMA, Ariz. - A few months after the departure of Tyler Kosel, the Gila Ridge Hawks officially announce that 24-year old Corey Semler will become it's next head football coach.
Semler is the 1st Gila Ridge graduate to become the school's head football coach and he's only the 5th individual to have this position in the program's young history.
The Hawks are coming off a dismal 1-9 overall record from last season; something Semler doesn't want to see happen again:
"It's always tough after you have a 1-9 season. It's tough on the players, it's tough on the coaches, it's tough on just the morale around school. So, getting kids excited about football season and there's nothing better than Friday Night Lights. Just really getting that Gila Ridge football culture back on track after a rough season is our first goal."
Semler served as the offensive coordinator for the junior varsity team in 2015 and the same position for the varsity squad last season.
Semler is one of the original 4-year student athletes that played football for Gila Ridge, being part of the 1st time the program defeated the likes of Cibola, Yuma and Kofa.
Semler is also the current head boys soccer coach for the Hawks.
