YUMA, Ariz. - Two weeks to the night of the rematch between the San Luis Sidewinders and Gila Ridge Hawks boys soccer teams; the memory of the team's first encounter of the season was chaotic.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the first match back on January 5, a brawl broke out on the field involving both teams.
Even though multiple investigations into the incident continue, the rematch would play out exactly two weeks later at Veteran's Memorial Stadium at Gila Ridge High School.
Unlike the first meeting, the Hawks started out playing with an aggressive tone this time around. Ridge would pull ahead to a 2-nil lead after goals by Esteban Franco and Yoseph Luque.
But the Sidewinders would eventually give their counter punches, as they would score 3 consecutive goals on the Hawks and hold their slight lead into the match's final seconds.
But, with just a single second remaining in regulation Pablo Vargas would get the Hawks 3rd goal of the night and send the match into overtime.
Despite the wild finish in regulation, both defenses would hold firm the rest of the way with the match ending in a 3-3 stalemate.
Both programs are expected to make the state playoffs in their respective divisions.
