Shocking playoff loss for Cibola softball

Lady Raiders give up early lead in blowout loss

YUMA, Ariz. - When the Cibola softball team took a lop-sided loss in the 6A Southern Section title game, the gold and black's unbeaten season came to an end.

Since then, the Raiders rebounded with a home 1st round playoff win over Rincon; but they had to string together runs late in the game to pull out the win to advance to round 2.

In the Lady Raider's final win of the regular season, they also had to rally late in the game; scoring 4 runs to secure the win over state power Perry.

In the 2nd round of the tournament, Cibola and Perry would meet once again at Cibola High School.

This time, the game turned out much different than what it was the 1st time around.

After the Lady Raiders kept the Pumas off the board in the top half of the 1st, Cibola would draw 1st blood.

Cibola starting pitcher Jannay Jones would connect with an RBI double, scoring Christina Robles to give the home team the 1-0 lead.

But that was as good as it got for the Lady Raiders, as Jones couldn't stop the Puma bats from going off in the 2nd inning; surrendering 6 runs.

It got worse from there, as the Lady Raiders gave up 8 more in a 14-1 tough loss.

Since the tournament is in the double-elimination phase, Cibola will next play in the loser's bracket on Thursday up at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.

They'll take on Desert Vista at 5:30 pm.
