CALEXICO, Calif. -
The Calexico School District voted to have new leadership last night.
Calexico School Unified District Superintendent Maria Ambriz was fired during Thursday’s regular board meeting. The board voted 3-2 to terminate Ambriz. They called it Termination Without Cause.
Many people commented on social media that this move came as a shock to them.
Ambriz served as superintendent for the past five years. The board will have to name someone to become interim superintendent before they name a permanent one. City officials said they have confidence in the board’s decision.
City Council Member Armando Real said, “They’ve had her being evaluated last couple of meetings. Usually, when the evaluation starts it means there’s some problems going on with either the direction with the council or the board is kind of maybe internally having some problems.”
Council Member Bill Hodge said, “The bedrock of education are the teachers. So, even among many changes, as long as quality teaching continues, the school district will be resilient."
We tried to contact the district for an official comment, but their offices were closed.
