An off-duty Yuma police officer accused of sexual assault in San Diego two months ago is now facing formal charges.
The Yuma Police Department says that the San Diego County District Attorney's Office has filed a criminal complaint against seven-year-veteran of the force, Jared Elkins, for eight felony offenses.
Elkins is facing charges of forcible rape, rape of an intoxicated person, two counts of forcible oral copulation, three counts of oral copulation of an intoxicated person, and forcible sexual penetration.
According to YPD, Elkins remains on paid administrative leave until further notice.
San Diego police arrested 33-year-old Elkins for alleged sexual assault on Sept. 15th. He was off-duty at the time of his arrest.
Elkins was released on $250,000 bail the day after his arrest and is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 22nd.
