Van strikes power pole, cutting electricity

SOMERTON, Ariz. - The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to the area of Somerton Avenue between Co. 14th and 15th for a vehicle vs. power pole at 1:52 p.m. Monday.

Arriving SCFD personal found a Ford Windstar minivan with severe damage, the van knocked out a power pole, fence and a tree.  Due to power lines down and right next to the vehicle SCFD personnel stayed away at a safety zone till the arrival of APS to de-energize the power lines and give an all clear.

Contact was made with the patient thru an open window and was advised to stay inside till we had an all clear from APS.  The patient was trapped inside his vehicle for approximate 48 minutes.  Once APS crew arrived at the scene and de-energize the power lines an all clear was given.

Paramedics started to treat the patient and he was extricated.  The only occupant of the minivan was a 59-year-old male patient complaining of neck and pain to his chest.   The patient stated that he got distracted and lost control of the vehicle and collided with the power pole.  He was transported to YRMC for further evaluation via San Luis Fire Department ambulance.  It is unknown how many APS customers lost power due to this accident.

APS remained on scene to repair the power pole. The Yuma County Sheriff Office is investigating the accident.
