Tense moments at an Imperial County construction site when a crane toppled on top of worker. It happened at a Union Pacific Railline Project early Tuesday morning.

It was a close call for a railroad worker after a crane came collapsing down on top of him. The victim was hit by the heavy steel structure, but amazingly escaped with only minor injuries. Zoe Richmond, a spokeman for Union Pacific says he was very fortunate.

"The individual got half lucky and then the other half was that he was wearing his safety equipment," Richmond said.

The man works for a contractor working on a Union Pacific Railrod Project. The crews were working on the railines just off Ogilby Road in Winterhaven when the crane toppled over.

"Crews were just starting their day to do some work on the bridge when apparently there was a failure of that crane that made it collapse," Richmond said.

The victim was airifted to the hospital, treasted, and released. Union Pacific Railroad is handling the investigation. As of now, it apppears the accident was not the fault of the workers, but instead a problem with the crane.

"It looks like everyone was acting safely and the failure was on the part of the equipement and why it happened is still going to be investigated," Richmond said.
