El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents confiscated nearly $12 million of cocaine at a checkpoint along Highway 86. Authorities made the discovery this past Wednesday in Indio, California. Agents say they used an imaging system to detect the drugs inside a brown SUV.
During an inspection, they found 75 pounds of the narcotic stuffed inside a spare tire, an audio speaker box and a tool box. The driver of the vehicle is a U.S. citizen and has been turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Calhoun believes the multi-million dollar bust will go a long way in preventing other drugs from seeping into communities. According to Calhoun, "The use of advanced technology and a canine team greatly enhanced the Border Patrol's ability to detect an illicit shipment of cocaine that has doubled last year's total amount seized by the El Centro Sector."
The state of Arizona filed an appeal on SB 1070 and Governor Jan Brewer vowed to battle the decision to the bitter end.
People in Mexico are reacting to U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton's decision to block parts of SB 1070 Wednesday.
