Local travelling fast-pitch softball teams were out in full force this past weekend at Yuma's Joe Henry Park in an effort to promote juvenile diabetes awareness. From working concession stands to playing ball, young athletes aged 12 and under pitched in to help out their cause.
The issue of diabetes is a personal one for the AZ Voodoo; a Yuma-based squad. Eleven-year-old Chelsea Nakasawa, the team's pitcher, is battling type-1 diabetes needing a pump just to get her through the days. Nakasawa says it can be tough sometimes to play at full strength, but credits her teammates for helping her make it through.
Voodoo coach Derek Yabo says the team raised more than $1,000 to fight diabetes this past weekend, but that's short of their $2,000 goal they were hoping to accomplish.
