Ron Barber, a former aide to Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords, has won Giffords' seat following a prolonged recount. Barber defeated republican challenger Martha Mcsally, a former Air Force pilot, to represent Arizona's Second Congressional District.
The race between Barber and Mcsally was too close to call with each candidate taking the lead at various times during election night. But in the end, Barber had a 1,402 vote margin with more than 285,000 votes cast in the race. Barber says he is optimistic that he can make a difference during the next term.
In a special June election, Barber was voted in to fill out the remainder of Giffords' term. He was wounded alongside Giffords when a gunman opened fire on them during a constituents meeting in Tucson in 2011.
