A Tacna man is suffering from severe injuries at a Phoenix hospital after he dropped a pipe bomb on his leg Tuesday night, according to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.

Around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Yuma County Sheriff's deputies received a call from the family of the man who injured himself.

When deputies arrived, they found Kobey Coulter, 31, with severe injuries to his legs.

"We found evidence of an explosion, and upon looking into it a little further, we found remnants of a pipe bomb, as well as components for making more," said Capt. Eben Bratcher.

A bomb squad removed the items from inside a shipping container Wednesday after obtaining a search warrant, Bratcher said.

Coulter was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix where his left leg had to be amputated below the knee. Doctors are working to save his right leg.

"There does not appear to be any ulterior motive for him having crafted these pipe bombs other than for his own personal entertainment," Bratcher said.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office said it received several reports of neighbors hearing the explosion up to a mile away.

One neighbor News 11 spoke with said she did not hear the explosion, but she said she was not surprised that someone in Tacna was playing with explosives for fun.

"Not a safe hobby to get in to. Mr. Coulter is lucky to be alive at this point," Bratcher said.
