The family of the 3-year-old boy injured in a hit-and-run Thursday evening tells News 11 that little Michael is awake, in a lot of pain with a fractured hip, and he cannot move his legs.

Surgeons will determine whether the boy will need surgery.

Meanwhile, deputies are still searching for the suspect who took off, and the little boy's aunt says justice needs to be served.

Thursday evening, Yuma County Sheriff's deputies say a driver struck little Michael with his truck while Michael was riding a child's toy in the parking lot of a business in the 2700 block of E. 16th St. The driver took off. The child's aunt said she is thankful her nephew is alive; however, doctors are still watching his condition closely.

"He is awake, but he can't move his legs. The surgeon is going to check on him, and at that point, see if he needs surgery or what they can do for him," Rodriguez said.

The child's mother also tells News 11 that her son may have to be flown to a hospital in Phoenix for surgery.

This is not the first time the family has had to deal with this kind of tragedy.

"Sixteen years ago, around 17 years ago, my sister was also hit by a car, too, and she died. So this happening just brings back a lot of memories," Rodriguez said.

Now, the family, thankful that little Michael is alive, just wants justice.

"...to turn himself in and to just realize what he did to my family," Rodriguez said that is what she wants the man who got away to do.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office is looking for the driver, who is described as a bald Hispanic man in his 30s.

He was driving a white newer model Ford single cab pickup. It had a flatbed-style body with a black trailer attached and was possibly carrying a water tank.
