Inside the Heart Center at Yuma Regional Medical Center, a new hybrid operating room is set to open April 8 that combines the latest imaging technology with surgical procedures within the same walls.
"It's a multi-disciplinary approach sort of room where you have a cardiologist, a surgeon, and a radiologist, anesthesiologist, all working on the same patient, at the same time," said Dr. Khidir Osman, a cardiologist at YRMC.
The new hybrid room is expected to make life-saving treatments more efficient, according to the doctors.
"Instead of having to wait 30 minutes or an hour to take them to the--rush them to the operating room, the operating room is already here [within the imaging lab]," said Dr. Roberto Cervera, a cardiovascular surgeon at YRMC.
Only one other hospital in Arizona uses this same state-of-the-art technology, according to Drs. Cervera and Osman.
Within this operating room, the doctors said they will be able to perform multiple procedures.
"You can also switch quickly from an invasive procedure to an open heart surgery without having to move the patient out of the room," Osman said.
Only six other hospitals in the surrounding states have this capability.
Doctors are excited to now be able to perform procedures that previously could not be done at YRMC.
The doctors said patients in the Yuma area will now be able to be treated in Yuma for most complicated heart procedures, rather than having to seek treatment out of the city.
