At 21 years old, Kelvin Gastelum is the youngest fighter to win the Ultimate Fighter, reality-show-styled competition.
Saturday, fans and friends welcomed the UFC fighter back to Yuma at a local venue. "The community [having] my back like that is just awesome,” said Gastelum. “It's just an awesome feeling. I can't describe it.”
Supporters young and old came from near and far to catch a glimpse of the champion. Frank Arellano, an Los Angeles area fan drove to Yuma to congratulate the young fighter. Gastelum is a Cibola graduate. He squared off against 28-year-old Uriah Hall for the record-setting championship last month.
He says Yuma was always in the back of his mind.
"I think I truly wouldn't have been able to do what I did if it wasn't for all the support," said Gastelum through his smile.
Despite his accomplishments in the Las Vegas ring, Gastelum boasts a humble demeanor. And has his eyes on the horizon.
"I'm going to be working to be the best that I can be”
