Watermelon, grilling, fireworks!
All mainstays of 4th of July, but the holiday weekend is also one of the busiest for fire departments across the country.
The number one reason for this? Fireworks.
In the state of Arizona, certain types of fireworks are legal; those being the types that do not leave the ground.
Nevertheless, Yuma Fire Department’s public information officer Mike Erfert says fireworks are never a safe bet.
He says the safest bet is to go out and enjoy a professional fireworks display, as they are often free.
Reason two fire officials are kept so busy this upcoming weekend? Grill accidents.
4th of July is a great time to grill, but if you do, make sure to dispose of hot coals safely and keep young children away from the flames.
Another issue to keep in mind is the hot, dry weather we experience here in the desert southwest, which can make any dry brush on your property a fire hazard.
Doing a quick clean-up of your planned grilling area can go a long way to preventing brush fires.
