After the arraignment, supporters of Joe Conner gathered outside of the courthouse for a rally in support of his innocence.
Joe Conner, a football coach at Southwest High School in El Centro, pleaded not guilty to allegations of child molestation and lewd acts to his two stepdaughters who were under the age of 14.
His stepdaughters, now adults, are accusing Conner of molesting them. They claim it began in 2009.
Conner's lawyer requested that Conner not be taken into custody and the judge granted the request.
Judge Anderholdt came to this decision because Conner has no prior criminal record and he doesn't think he's flight risk because he has a home and family in the valley.
Conner is also a pastor of New Beth El Baptist Church in Brawley.
Supporters packed the courtroom and then rallied outside after the decision.
“We just came out here to give him moral support but we know it's in God's hands and God's going to make everything all right,” says friend Fredrick Bryant. “We know it's going to be all right.”
Conner will be back in court at the end of November.
