Honorable Judge Russ Jones of Wellton Justice Court informed former Tempe police officer Garrett Peterson of the six felony charges filed against him.
Appearing via teleconference from the Yuma County Jail, the 30-year-old is facing four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon along with one count each of unlawful flight from law enforcement and criminal damage.
The charges stem from Peterson’s drive down Interstate 8 Monday afternoon, when he led Department of Public Safety officers on a high speed chase, driving down the wrong side of the highway.
The pursuit quickly came to a halt when the former police officer collided with a tractor trailer just outside of Wellton, sending him to the hospital, and then straight to jail.
This was following an arrest early Saturday after being accused of threatening his ex-wife before fleeing from officers while allegedly driving intoxicated.
Peterson will remain in custody on a one million dollar secured bond.
