At her birthday celebration Helen Covey just takes it all in.
"It's just great. You know what i mean?" said Covey.
Five generations and a century's worth of family gathered Tuesday at Emerald Springs in Yuma to celebrate Helen's 100th birthday.
"It’s just another day," she explained—a modest outlook on a milestone most people will not reach.
"We're very fortunate that god has blessed us," said Casey Warner, one of Helen’s daughters.
Friends and family planned a surprised birthday party for Helen Tuesday evening. They say she’s a woman who always put her family first.
"My father got quite ill, and she went out and worked in the supermarket,” said Warner. “She's worked as a waitress … whatever was necessary to keep us and to feed us and take care of us."
Much of the family honored a mother who worked hard for the better part of a century. They're goal was to surprise her on her special day.
"I hadn't really thought about it and I really was [surprised],” said Covey. "I guess I am speechless."
