Man distracts suspect in armed robbery manages to escape

YUMA, Ariz. - A man was able to escape from an armed robbery that happened Wednesday morning by using his cell phone as a distraction.

Yuma police (YPD) said the victim was doing maintenance work on the 1300 block of West 24th Street.

It was reported that the suspect presented a gun and demanded the victim's wallet. Authorities said the victim refused to give the suspect his wallet and threw his cell phone on the ground as a distraction. He managed to get away safely and contacted the police. 

Police are describing the suspect as a white male, in his 30’s, approximately 5’10 height, 220 pounds, wearing a black shirt, black pants or slacks, and a black baseball cap.  He was last seen running on foot westbound towards 14th Avenue and headed northbound.  A black hat was found in the 1900 block South 14th Avenue.  The suspect is still at large. 

No injuries were reported and no further information is available, according to YPD

Detectives are investigating this case.

If caught, the suspect will face felony charges.
